04/03/2015 #02 - To get the floor level they use a rotating laser leveler, seen on the tripod, to project the desired level of the completed floor on the walls. Then they carefully nail expansion material to the walls so that the top edge of it is even with line projected on the walls by the laser. Expansion material is needed so that when the floor and wall inevitably settle, expand or contract, the walls and floor won’t crack. On the wall side, they used a double layer of a slightly different material for soundproofing. Next they attach twine at the top of the expansion and stretch them tautly (so it doesn’t sag) across the dirt base. So now the twine is at the desired level of the floor; you can see the white twine in the first two pictures. Finally they simply measure down four inches from the twine and add or remove dirt as needed. The first picture shows him raking the dirt that is a little high which he’ll remove with the wheelbarrow. The dirt has to be four inches lower than the strings after it is made firm using the compactor shown in the foreground.
